The Mexican narcotic cartels are ruthless. They operate in the open as the government of Mexico is corrupt from its top ranks to the lowest ranks of the government. I have witnessed firsthand the political theater called “The War on Drugs” and its sister “The War on Illegal Immigration”. Not only do these wars run side by side, but they are also both purposefully losers.

I was in my fifth or sixth year as a Border Patrol Agent and I will never forget reading a book by a former DEA Agent Michael Levine titled Deep Cover. Agent Levine’s storytelling about his undercover operations infiltrating the drug cartels was literally a page turner. But it was what he wrote on the inside of his book cover that struck a nerve in me. Agent Levine wrote that he painfully realized after decades of service that the “War on Drugs” was a lie. I remember sitting in my house holding that book and rereading that line written by Levine and replacing the word “Drugs” with the word “Immigration” and I painfully realized the lie that I found myself in.
